“UNCERTAINTY” is mentioned over and over again by Chief Learning Officers and talent executives from major organizations as we head into 2022 in a few days.
Uncertain about the location of work in the coming weeks/months of an evolving COVID era.
Uncertain about the future of face-to-face learning events - from briefings to leadership academies to national learning conferences.
Uncertain about the motivation and style shifts of our employees as learners - who have evolved their expectations in the last 18 “virtual events.”
Uncertain about changes in the size of the workforce - with departures and organizational restructures abounding.
Uncertain about curating the enormous growth in the galaxy of content being offered each employee from internal and external collections.
Uncertain about the duration and timing of learning experiences - as learner attention is shifting.
Uncertain about budgets for learning and development departments - as business units mount their own content and collaboration experiences.
Uncertain about announcements of future learning schedules.
Uncertain about the L&D role in supporting diversity and empathy with a challenged workforce and shifting career and role expectations.
As learning leaders, we must accept and “own” the uncertainty of now - while providing support and transparency to the workforce. Learning and Development can play a major role in working through these uncertainty. We will need to be innovative, experimental and deeply authentic with our management and employees.
It is OK to own the “Uncertainty”. In fact, we will be trusted more as we are clear about what we know and what is unknown.
On a personal note, MASIE Innovations is focused on supporting conversations in the Learning and Development field about these “Uncertainties”. In 2022, we will be hosting dialogues and interactions with learning and business leaders about major shifts in our field. We look forward to engaging the tens of thousands of “Notes” readers in these conversations. Send me comments to emasie@masie.com

Elliott, I am heartened to hear about the series that MAISIE Innovations is planning to bring L&D and business leaders into a meaningful dialogue about uncertainty. Uncertainty is a state we must pass through on our way to creating new ways of thinking, acting and being that will—hopefully—enable us to collectively turn uncertainty into opportunities. I look forward to learning more about this! Wishing you, and all, a wonderful 2022!
Elliott -- as the year-end approaches, let’s strive to help others raise their sights. There is much that we all can do. It starts with reflecting on who we are and who we want to be. May the good things in life be yours in abundance, again this holiday season. May you find people, places and things that bring you big smiles and moments of great joy. Best -- Robert
