“Rattled!?!” reflects what I am hearing, seeing, and sensing from colleagues in the workplace as we head into 2024.
Rattled Definition: Uncertain, Nervous, Worried, Unsettled, Unclear, Agitated, Pre-Occupied, Fretting and Frightened
Many people are rattled by some of these changes in their world:
Career Uncertainty
Job Shifts
Technology Disruptions (AI +)
Wars & Terrorism (Israel, Ukraine and More)
Political Extremes
Economy Worries
And More…
What makes the conversation about “Rattled” complicated is that many people are actually experiencing many positives in real time, YET are highly uncertain about tomorrows.
The layers of being “rattled” are complex and often contradictory. I met a colleague at a shopping mall in New York City and they complained about the bad economy - while carrying $700 of holiday gifts just purchased. I probed with a question and they said: “I am doing OK today - but I don’t know where the economy, interest rates and compensation is heading in these weird times. It is really rattling to face the future!”
Keep in mind that there are no magical or easy solutions to the “rattled” vibe or reality in the workplace other than:
Authenticity
Trust
Empathy
Storylistening
Collaboration
Transparency
Acknowledge the Unknown
Compassion & Appropriate Humor
Balance the Certain with the Uncertain
As we head into 2024, let us acknowledge the threads of being “rattled” in our lives. It impacts everyone - even those that have very different realities and perceptions.
Hopefully, 2024 will be a time when we can find new personal, organizational and societal ways of coping with being “Rattled”.

Thank you, Elliott, for putting a word and definition on what we all appear to be experiencing. And for reminding us of the path forward.
Grateful for your thoughtful analysis of the current mood Elliott. Being rattled seems to be the undercurrent of everything we do these days, including walking into our temple. Here’s to a happier, healthier, safer 2024!🥂❤️🩹
